In the 8th century, when a Buddhist monk brought tea from China to Japan, growing began to spread through the region. The most impressive tea-growing district in Japan is Shizuoka, which lies in the picturesque surroundings at the foot of the holy mountain Fuji.
Most of all the tea produced in Japan is green, this includes all of the famous Japanese teas including sencha, gyokuro and hōji-cha.
Most Japanese green teas are steamed which gives them a more “leafy” taste. Japanese green teas are categorized by the age of the leaves. The young leaves are called sencha and the more mature, larger leaves are called bancha.
