In the 1980s, after several years of war brought Vietnam’s tea production to a standstill, several countries, including Japan, helped the country rebuild their tea industry with the production of sencha style green tea to supplement their growing tea demands.
Later India provided technical assistance to produce black tea and Taiwan taught the Vietnamese how to produce pouchong style (very lightly oxidized) oolong tea. Ever since, the tea industry in Vietnam has flourished.
